How to Do APA Citations With a Magazine Volume

APA (American Psychological Association) style is a system of formatting and citation used most often by students and professionals working in the social sciences. The APA sets specific guidelines for the citation of sources, including magazines published by volume. Articles from magazines should be cited within the text according to standard APA procedure: (author's last name, year of publication, page number). However, magazine articles must be cited a specific way when included in a reference list or works-cited page.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin your citation with the last name and first initial of the author. This should appear as follows: Jones, L.

    • 2

List the year, month and day of publication. Enclose the date in parentheses, followed by a period. For example: (2007, August 13).

    • 3

List the title of the article, followed by a period. Capitalize only the first letter of the title, as well as any proper nouns. For example: Health care and patient care in America.

If there is a subtitle, the first letter of the subtitle must also be capitalized. For example: Health care and patient care in America: The coming storm.

    • 4

List the name of the magazine in italics, followed by a comma.

    • 5

List the volume number, followed by a comma. The volume number should also appear in italics.

    • 6

List the page numbers on which the article appears, followed by a period. For example: 65-70.

The complete citation should appear as: Jones, L. (2007, August 13). Health care and patient care in America. Newsweek, 96, 65-70. Remember to italicize both the title of the magazine and the volume number.
