How to Cite a Written Paper in a Psychology Class

One of the facts of college life is that research papers will be written. When writing a paper for a psychology class, the "American Psychological Association (APA) Style Manual" is followed, unless your professor requests you to use a different style. APA Style uses in-text citations instead of footnotes, and the formatting of the resource list is slightly different than other styles, but in general, once you learn the rules, it is just as easy to use as any other citation style.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the name of the author you are citing in the sentence in which they are cited and then list the year of publication for the paper in which the fact was listed in parenthesis after the sentence, as in "According to John Doe, xyz (2011)." If more than one author but fewer than four are listed for the source list all of their names the first time the citation is used and then "Doe, et. al" afterward. Anything written by five or more authors should always be listed like that.

    • 2

Place the entire reference in parenthesis after the sentence if the author's names don't fit into the sentence you are writing, following the same formatting rules as above (one to four authors written out fully the first time, five or more listed as the first author's name et. al) with the date of publication in the parenthesis. For example, "The major school of thought on the matter is xyz (Doe, 2011)."

    • 3

Insert a direct quote from a cited text into your paper and then list your in-text citation at the end of the sentence in the format (date, page number) or (author, date, page number), depending on whether or not the author is listed in the written paper. For example, John Doe said, "X, Y and Z" (2011, p. 1). or He listed "X, Y, Z" as conditions (Doe, 2011, p. 1).

    • 4

Compose your citation list, with the complete information on each source used, in alphabetical order by author's last name. If you have several anonymous papers, list them alphabetically by the title of the resource. The first line will be against the left margin and all other lines in the source will be indented five spaces to the right. The general format of a resource will be: Author (year). Title. Journal from which the paper is resourced (if a book, this section will not be needed), pages.
