How to Cite and Reference a Movie in APA Format

APA style is the citation format of choice for the American Psychological Association, or APA, as set forth in a reference book called "The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association." It is used most often for scientific writing, particularly that of the behavioral or social sciences. As with any citation style, the APA style can be used to cite and reference any and all types of media, including non-print forms such as movies.

Instructions

    • 1

Find and note the name of the movie's producer. This should be visible on the box of the movie, and can be found online as well.

    • 2

Find and note the name of the movie's director.

    • 3

Find and note the date of the movie's publication. This the year of the film's release, and can be found on the box of the film's home video or DVD release or online.

    • 4

Note the movie's country of origin, as well as its studio or distributor.

    • 5

Combine the information into a reference. The format is as follows:

Producer, [producer name], & Director, [director name]. (Date of publication). </i> [Title of film] </i> (Motion picture). Country of origin: Studio or distributor.

For example, an APA reference for the film "The Night of the Hunter" would appear as follows:

Producer, Paul Gregory, & Director, Charles Laughton. 1955. </i> The Night of the Hunter </i> (Motion picture). United States of America: MGM.

To cite a movie in APA format, use the director's last name, followed by the year of the movie's publication, in parentheses. For example, an in-text citation for "The Night of the Hunter" would look like this: (Laughton, 1955).
