The University of Georgia has all the advantages of a major research university--nearly 200 majors to choose from, a diverse student body of over 23,000 undergraduates and big-time athletics--with a surprisingly small price tag. A year's tuition for a Georgia resident in 2009 to 2010 was only $7,530, and the university awards over four million dollars in scholarships every year to lower the cost even more. When students aren't hitting the books in popular majors like biology, psychology and English, they're probably cheering on the Bulldogs in one of twelve varsity sports or enjoying the surrounding city of Athens. Located less than two hours from Atlanta, Athens is frequently ranked as one of the best college towns in America. Greek life is also popular on campus--nearly a quarter of students join one of several dozen fraternities and sororities.

For students looking for a smaller, more intimate campus experience, Clayton State University is an affordable choice. Tuition for Georgia residents was only $2,504 per semester in 2009 to 2010--the lowest of any of Georgia's public four-year universities. Freshmen on this 6,000 student campus are required to live in Laker Hall, Clayton State's on-campus residence hall, creating a sense of community among students and making it easy for them to take advantage of all that the lakeside campus has to offer. Popular majors include Criminal Justice, Health Care Management and Information Technology. Many other students choose the Liberal Studies program, which allows them to create their own major. Students also take advantage of Clayton State's location in the metro Atlanta area to land internships and take classes not offered by CSU at other area schools.

Macon State College offers a variety of associate's and bachelor's degrees that focus on preparation for in-demand careers in the surrounding region. The majority of the college's 6,400 students attend the main campus in Macon, but there is also a smaller campus in nearby Warner-Robins that primarily serves students stationed at Robins Air Force Base. Tuition at either campus was $1,441 for Georgia residents in 2009 to 2010, making it possible for a student to earn a bachelor's degree at Macon State for less than $12,000 total. While the School of Business is home to the most popular majors, many other students choose one of several education majors or work toward an associate's degree, which allows them to transfer to a four-year university with junior standing. To further attract students who are drawn to Macon State's expanding bachelor's degree options, brand new on-campus apartments will open in time for fall semester 2010.
