Art Contest Scholarships

A formal education in the arts can be costly but there are scholarship contests that can help ease the financial burden for young artists. Competitions exist for both high-school and college students, with prizes ranging from a few hundred dollars to a full-tuition scholarship at the host institution.
  1. Kendall Art Day Scholarship Competition

    • The Kendall Art Day Scholarship Competition is a one-day art contest open to high-school seniors. Students compete for the chance to win up to $20,000 in scholarship money (as of February 2010) to attend Kendall College. The contest is open to students working in all media forms including drawing, painting, sculpture, graphic design, ceramics and photography.

    Columbus College of Art and Design Portfolio Scholarship Competition

    • The Columbus College of Art and Design holds an annual portfolio scholarship competition open to high-school seniors. Applicants are judged based on the quality of work contained in their portfolio. Pieces that demonstrate drawing skills are encouraged. Winners receive scholarships ranging from $10,000 to $44,000 (as of February 2010), which are applied to tuition costs at Columbus College. Additionally, three students will receive full scholarships to the college.

    Fine Art Finals Scholarship Competition

    • The Fine Art Finals is a scholarship competition for both high-school and undergraduate art students. Collegiate awards range from $300 to $1,200 and awards for high-school students range from $125 to $500 (all amounts as of February 2010). The contest is open to students working in graphic design, jewelry design, photography, digital art, printmaking, painting and drawing.

    The Art Institutes' Scholarship Competitions for Future Students

    • The Art Institutes offer a number of contests for high-school students, including competitions in fashion design, photography and poster design. Students must submit their entry at the nearest Art Institutes school and prizes from $2,000 to $3,000 (as of February 2010) are awarded locally. At the national level, first-, second-, and third-place winners receive full-, half-, and quarter-tuition scholarships to the Art Institutes school of their choice.

    Art Renewal Center Scholarship Competition

    • The Art Renewal Center Scholarship Competition is open to students who are enrolled or planning to enroll at an ARC-approved art institution. Scholarship awards range from $1,000 to $2,500 (as of February 2010) with an additional $10,000 awarded to young artists who show promise but are not enrolled in a formal art program. Submissions must be in the form of a painting or sculpture and only entries depicting figurative images, such as still-lifes, landscapes and portraits, will be accepted.
