The Illinois Department of Public Health sponsors four scholarship programs for students who plan to pursue careers in public health. Scholarships are available to students who are enrolled in allied health, medicine, nursing and podiatry programs at accredited colleges and universities in Illinois. Individual scholarship awards and eligibility criteria vary and for every year an award is granted, recipients must complete one year of service working with underserved populations in their chosen field.

The University of Illinois-Chicago School of Public Health administers several scholarship programs for public health students at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels. There are general scholarship programs as well as scholarships designed for specific student populations, such as minorities, or for specific research areas, such as maternal-fetal medicine. Individual eligibility criteria and award amounts vary, however, all scholarships are granted primarily on the basis of academic merit.

The Scrivner Public Health Foundation provides $1,000 scholarship awards to graduating seniors in St. Clair County, Illinois, who plan to pursue public health degrees. Recipients are selected on the basis of academic achievement, extracurricular activities, letters of recommendation and financial need. Students must also submit an essay outlining the importance of a strong public health system to the community.

The Illinois Public Health Association offers scholarships to graduate students who are enrolled in public health degree programs at accredited colleges and universities in Illinois. Scholarship awards range from $1,000 to $2,000 and recipients are also granted a one-year student membership in the IPHA.

The Harry S. Truman Scholars Program awards merit-based scholarships of $30,000 to third-year undergraduate students who plan to pursue graduate degrees in public health or related fields. Applicants must demonstrate the capacity for academic excellence, leadership skills, service to the community and the potential to succeed in a graduate program. In exchange for the scholarship, recipients must agree to a three-year period of public service at an approved institution.
