Global Health Scholarships

Trained students and professionals are needed to solve deadly global health issues such as AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. For example, the World Health Organization estimates that 33.4 million people are living with AIDS and 2 million people died of AIDS in 2008. In 2002, 11 million people died of infectious diseases, according to GlobalIssues.org. Universities award global health scholarships to address world health concerns while educating the next generation of health professionals.
  1. The Leahy Global Health Scholarship Program

    • The Leahy Global Health Scholarship Program educates young people about current global health issues and how to address health issues that affect the most vulnerable populations in the world. The applicant must be a Vermont resident or attend a Vermont school between grades 9 to 11. All interested applicants must fill out an online application and write an essay on one of three possible topics that address global health. Scholarship winners will meet Senator Patrick Leahy; tour the Capitol Building and attend an all-expenses paid trip to Global Health Council's Annual International Conference. The recipient must develop and implement a community-based project in their community within a year. Furthermore, the recipient must write an article about the project for his or her school and possibly local newspapers, according to GlobalHealthCouncil.org.

    Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars Program

    • This program at Vanderbilt University offers one year of clinical research for graduate-level U.S. students in health professions. Individuals receive mentored research training at National Institutes of Health centers in developing countries. Interested applicants must have advanced standing in a U.S. medical, dental or osteopathic school. Students may also be enrolled in doctoral level program at a U.S. school of public health, nursing or pharmacy among others. Applicants must also have support of their home academic institution which includes a school mentor. The program begins with orientation training at the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland, followed by at least ten months of research training at an international site, according to Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars and Fellows.

    Johns Hopkins Global Health Scholarships

    • The Center for Global Health awards scholarships to students with strong academic records and intent to pursue public health careers. Eight or nine students are selected as scholarship recipients to the Bloomberg School of Public Health. There is no separate application for this scholarship. All admitted students to the Bloomberg School of Public Health are considered for the award. Only incoming domestic or international students are eligible. The scholarship provides full tuition for the 11-month Master of Public Health program and one year of a two-year Master in Health Science or Master in Science program, according to the Johns Hopkins website.
