Government Grants for Minorities in Indiana

The state of Indiana awards grants to individuals of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds in order to encourage and inspire educational and professional success. The State Student Assistance Commission of Indiana (SSACI) awards scholarships to minority college students. The Governor's Commission on Minority and Women's Business Enterprises provides grant assistance to minority entrepreneurs.
  1. Minority Teacher Scholarship

    • In 1988, the Indiana General Assembly and the SSACI created the Minority Teacher Scholarship because of the shortage of minority teachers in the state. Students eligible for this grant must (1) be a minority student (Black or Hispanic), (2) seeking a degree and certification in education, (3) be an Indiana resident, (4) be admitted to an approved college or university and attend full-time, and (5) file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Eligible students can receive up to $4,000 annually towards college tuition. Recipients of the grant must maintain a 3.0 GPA and reapply each year. Students must check with their chosen college to see if it participates in the scholarship program; not all colleges are approved. Colleges are responsible for administering the scholarship awards to students. The grants are nontransferable. Students must re-apply if they transfer to a new university.

For consideration, applications must be submitted to your college's Office of Financial Aid. The SSACI does not accept applications.

    Part-time Grant Program

    • Indiana created the Part-Time Grant program for the high percentage of minority students who are enrolled in an Indiana college or university part-time in order to work or care for a family full-time. SSACI designed the program to encourage students to complete their associate or baccalaureate degrees by covering the cost of part-time tuition. The grant money is approved and managed by Indiana colleges, but grant winners are subject to approval by the SSACI. The grant is need based and awarded each semester. To be considered for the grant, students must be (1) registered for 3-12 credit hours, (2) a resident of Indiana and (3) have a completed and filed FAFSA.

Minority and Women's Business Enterprises Division

    • The Minority and Women's Business Enterprises Division (M/WBED) was formed to help ensure that minorities (especially women) are given equal opportunity for small business development in the state of Indiana. The division determines available funds for grants, votes on winners and awards money to each chosen minority-owned company. In order to be eligible, a minority candidate must (1) own 51 percent of the company, (2) be a business entity certified by the Indiana secretary of state and (3) be a U.S. citizen. Also, the recipient of these grants may be provided with additional financial assistance for employee training opportunities.
