The American Educational Research Association (AERA) provides funding through its Minority Dissertation Fellowship Research program. The program was established to help meet the financial needs of minority doctoral students who wish to advance the field of education research. Funds must be used for education-related expenses such as tuition, travel, living expenses, academic supplies as well as books and fees. The award total includes a one-year stipend of $12,000 and applicants must be members of an underrepresented minority group. Application deadlines typically are in December of each year.

The National Research Council of the National Academies provides fellowships for doctoral students through the Ford Foundation Fellowship Program. Awards are separated into three categories and were established to provide doctoral students financial support through the predoctoral, dissertation and postdoctoral phases of their degree programs. Although the program was established to increase the number of minorities in the education field, applicants are able to apply and be considered for the fellowship regardless of race. Doctoral students must be enrolled in a Ph.D or Sc.D program. Students must be interested in teaching at the university level. The stipends for each program are as follows: predoctoral students are able to receive $20,000 for one year; doctoral students engaged in the dissertation process receive a one-year stipend of $21,000; and those in the postdoctoral stage receive an annual stipend of $40,000. The application period opens in January of each year.

National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science, Inc. (GEM) makes available fellowship opportunities to help further the recruitment and retention of minorities in the Engineering and Science fields. Through its Ph.D. Science Fellowship Program, GEM provides students with a one-year stipend of $14,000 as well as a paid summer internship opportunity. Interested students must be a minority and be enrolled in a Ph.D program focused in engineering and science. In addition, doctoral students must attend a university that is a member of GEM. The annual deadline for completed applications is November.
