Awarded annually in March, the Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellowship provides a stipend and funds for research costs and university fees to students of the humanities and related social sciences who are in their final year of doctoral studies. Students must be enrolled in a program in the United States, have completed all PhD requirements except the dissertation and be no more than six years into the program. Applicants must submit the application form along with a five-page proposal, bibliography, completed dissertation chapter, two reference letters and a letter of support from their institution of study.

The Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship is awarded to students of superior academic achievement who are enrolled or planning to enroll in a PhD or ScD program at an American college or university. The grant provides three years of support in the form of an annual stipend, payment of university fees and an all-expenses-paid trip to at least one Conference of Ford Fellows. Eligible students are US citizens committed to a career in teaching, who are engaged with underrepresented communities in American academia. Membership in an underrepresented ethnic or racial group (African American, Native American, Puerto Rican, Mexican American) is an additional positive factor. Applicants must submit a statement of previous research, essay describing proposed plan of study, personal statement and four letters of recommendation.

The National Science Foundation provides both direct and indirect funding for students enrolled in graduate science and engineering programs including astronomy, astrophysics, the biological sciences and cyber service. Additional funding is available for training, curricula development and retention. Typical awards provide funding for three years of research including funds for equipment, travel and research materials in addition to a stipend. Grant proposals generally include a project summary, 15-page project description, references, budget, description of the available facilities, biographical sketch of the student and fellow researchers and a list of current and pending funding.
