Grants for a Doctoral Degree

A doctoral degree follows a master's degree and usually involves defending a dissertation, a written work that adds to the body of knowledge in your field. While the cost of obtaining a doctorate can be expensive, there are many grants that can help defray the cost.
  1. Sciences

    • The National Science Foundation awards Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grants in the biological sciences. The grants aim to allow students to attend conferences and conduct research, improving the quality of dissertations. Annual awards are $7,000 to $15,000.

    Math-Based Fields

    • The Ford Foundation offers $21,000 fellowships for one year of support. The funds, which are provided for other disciplines as well, are meant to aid students with completing their dissertation. They are specifically for minority students who have an interest in conducting research and teaching at a university. Additionally, students may want to look into grants through their graduate department. The University of New Mexico, for instance, has grants worth $8,000 to aid in the completion of a dissertation.
