Veterinary Student Scholarships

According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, there are only 28 colleges in the United States that are accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). This means that these veterinarian programs are very competitive. For example, in 2007, only one out of every three applicants were accepted into these schools. There are a number of scholarships intended for veterinary as well as pre-veterinary medical students.
  1. American Kennel Club Veterinary Student Scholarships

    • Every year, The American Kennel Club (AKC) provides scholarships totaling up to $135,000. Applicants must be enrolled as full-time students in an accredited veterinary medical school within the United States. Students cannot directly apply for this scholarship; instead, up to four students from each school are nominated each year based on research and activities related to purebred dogs, financial need or academic achievement.

Veterinary Scholarship Trust of New England

    • Every year, the Veterinary Scholarship Trust of New England distributes more than 10 different types of scholarships to New England resident students enrolled in an accredited AVMA veterinary school. Qualified candidates must have graduated from a public high school in Massachusetts, Maine, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire or Rhode Island and maintained a five-year residency in one of those states after graduation. Applications are available on the foundation's website, and all applications must be signed by a veterinarian within one of these five states who knows the candidate, as well as the dean of students or registrar, verifying the student is in good academic standing.
