The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation provides the Gates Millennium Scholars program for minority students. The program is managed by UNCF. Eligible students are U.S. citizens, legal residents, permanent residents or nationals. Applicants must be first-time enrollees planning full-time study at U.S. colleges or universities. Applicants must meet federal Pell grant eligibility criteria and may be high school graduates or recipients of a GED. Graduate school scholarships are available for specific programs of study.

The Mellon Foundation created the MMUF to address the lack of minority faculty in colleges and universities. The program increases the number of minority students pursuing doctoral degrees in the arts and sciences. Campus coordinators manage the program at more than 80 institutions, including 39 HBCUs. The programs selects participants annually -- five from each campus and another 25 from UNCF member schools.

The UNCF supports 39 member colleges and manages 400 scholarships and internships. Students that attend HBCUs may complete a general application which qualifies them for most UNCF scholarships; however, several scholarships require separate applications. UNCF provides an online application on their website.
