How To Discover Nursing Scholarships

Nursing professionals are in short supply today, and the need for them in the health care industry has prompted many to attend school to become nurses. Careful planning and research can help you find the right nursing scholarship for you. Some provide tuition assistance as well as a monthly stipend, such as the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Department, Health and Services Resource Administration's nursing scholarship, which also requires scholarship recipients to work in areas in critical need of nurses for two years. Talk to your school's financial aid department first.

Contact your school's financial aid department. If you have not decided on a nursing program to attend, contact the financial aid departments of the schools you are considering. Ask if there are nursing scholarships available through the school. Also ask if they can recommend scholarships offered outside of the school. There may be some regional or local ones available that are not as widely publicized as the school's or national scholarship programs.

Scholarship search websites eliminate scholarships you're not eligible for.

Register on websites for nursing scholarships. Some websites like Minority Nurse (see Resources) ask for your specific information and will perform a customized nursing scholarship search for you. Another scholarship search site is Fast Web.

Ask students at various nursing programs what kinds of scholarships they received. Visit online nursing forums to ask nurses and nursing students what scholarships or grants they were awarded. You can also ask the reference librarian at your public library for assistance in locating nursing scholarships.
