Hispanic Doctoral Scholarships

Even though Latinos are the largest growing racial and ethnic minority group in the country, they have lower college completion rates than other group, according to the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. Nonprofit organizations, advocacy groups and corporations offer financial assistance to academically talented Hispanic students, including those at the doctoral level, in order to help raise the educational levels of Latinos.
  1. Advancing Hispanic Excellence in Technology, Engineering, Math and Science (AHETEMS) Foundation

    • AHETEMS is a nonprofit organization that provides educational outreach to Hispanic students from high school to the doctoral level. The AHETEMS Dissertation Scholarship is a merit-based award. Ph.D. students who have passed all required coursework can apply for the $5,000 scholarship. Eligibility requirements include a minimum 3.50 GPA, enrollment in an accredited university in the United States or Puerto Rico and pursuit of a doctoral degree in science, engineering, math or technology. Applicants must submit a personal statement, a transcript, a resume, a dissertation abstract, a recommendation and an official statement of their doctoral candidacy from their school.

    League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) National Scholarship Fund

    • Graduates students can apply for the LULAC National Scholarship Fund (LNSF) awards. The scholarships are given annually by local chapters of the advocacy organization. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship or legal residence and an excellent academic record. Students must submit results of standardized test scores and a transcript. Award amounts vary. Applications are submitted directly to local chapters. A list of LULAC branches can be found on the organization's website.

    Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute

    • Hispanic graduate students who plan careers in public service can apply for a scholarship from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. CHCI is a nonprofit organization that works to promote an increase in Hispanic participation in American public policy. Doctoral candidates can apply for a $5,000 scholarship from CHCI. Eligibility criteria include U.S. citizenship or permanent residency, a strong record of public and/or community service activity, enrollment in an accredited university and demonstration of financial need. Students fill out the scholarship application on CHCI's website.

    Hispanic College Fund, Google Scholarship Program

    • Google partners with the Hispanic College Fund to offer a scholarship for graduates students studying computer science or computer engineering. Ph.D. students are eligible for the program and each individual award is for $10,000. Winners also receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Google's headquarters in California. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, enrolled in an accredited university, have a minimum 3.5 GPA and demonstrate financial need. Students must submit proof of their citizenship status, an essay and a letter of recommendation.
