The Navy provides scholarships to students who are pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing through the Navy Nurse Candidate Program. These scholarships are awarded in the amount of $10,000, and the Navy also provides recipients a monthly cost-of-living allowance of $1,000. In return, students must commit to four to five years of active service as a nurse in the Navy. Students are able to apply after their sophomore year. In order to be eligible, a student must be a United States citizen less than 40 years old and must be able to meet physical fitness standards set by the Navy. The Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps offers full-tuition scholarships to nursing students who are in the NROTC. In addition to paying for all of a student's tuition, these scholarships also pay for books and offer a monthly cost-of-living stipend of between $250 for college freshmen and $400 for college seniors. In order to qualify, a student must be accepted at a college that offers the NROTC nursing academic program, and must have earned an SAT critical reading score of at least 530 or ACT English score of 22; an SAT math score of 520 or ACT math score of 21; or must be in the top tenth percentile of her graduating class. In addition to offering generous scholarships to current and prospective nursing students, the Navy also helps current nurses pay down the debt they incurred as nursing students through the Navy Health Professions Loan Repayment Program. Current nurses who commit to three years of service with the Navy can receive a $20,000 sign-on bonus. A commitment of four years will net a nurse a sign-on bonus of $30,000, and a five-year service commitment can get a nurse a $20,000 sign-on bonus and up to $40,000 towards existing school loan debt. In order to qualify, a nurse must be a United States citizen, must be licensed to practice in the United States, must be between 18 and 41 years of age, and must be able to pass a physical exam.
