Canadian Photography Grants

A variety of grants are available to Canadian photographers. The primary funding resource for visual artists is the Canadian government, which has an extensive support system for artists working in all mediums. While some grants are open to all Canadian visual artists, others are limited to artists based in a specific geographical area. Some grants fund specific projects, and others may provide more open-ended funding.
  1. CCA Grants for Visual Artists

    • The Canadian Council for the Arts (CCA) provides a variety of grants to visual artists for which Canadian photographers are eligible. Project grants for visual artists help fund an artist for the duration of a single project, which may entail research, creation, production and professional development. In addition to helping defray the costs associated with a particular project, project grants may also provide a subsistence stipend of up to $2,000 per month. The CCA also provides long-term grants to individual Canadian visual artists that provide up to $40,000 of support per year for up to two consecutive years. To be eligible for CCA grants, an applicant must be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada and must be recognized as a professional artist. Application deadlines vary by grant. Interested individuals should visit the CCA website for complete program details.

    OAC Visual Arts Grants

    • The Ontario Arts Council (OAC) makes grant assistance available to Canadian photographers through its Visual Arts Grant Program. Three levels of support are available. Grants for emerging artists are for photographers who are relatively new to their field, although they must have at least three years of professional experience. Grants for emerging artists are $5,000 each. The annual deadline for application is December 1.

Grants for mid-career artists are awarded in the amount of $7,500. A photographer must have a minimum of eight years of professional experience to apply for a grant in this category. The annual deadline for application is September 15.

Established photographers with over 15 years of professional experience who have amassed an extensive and recognized body of work may apply for a grant of up to $15,000. The annual deadline for application at the established artist level is May 3.

Photographers must be based in Ontario to be eligible for OAC Visual Artist Grants. More information is available at the OAC website.
