How to Register for the TOEFL Examination

Nearly a million people take the TOEFL (Test Of English as a Foreign Language) exam each year. The TOEFL is an exam used to measure proficiency in the English language for those individuals who speak it as a second language. Many people choose to take the TOEFL exam in order to apply for college in English-speaking areas, obtain scholarships or apply for a visa. Registering for the TOEFL exam can be done in a variety of ways.

      Register by phone. If you are in Canada or the USA call 1-800-468-6335 or 1-443-751-4862. If you reside in a different location, visit the TOEFL registration homepage to obtain information for your area.

      Register online at the TOEFL registration page. You can also pay in advance online with a credit or debit card. For help in registering online, refer to the registration guidelines pdf. (See Resources.)

      Register by mail. Download the registration application on the TOEFL registration page, fill it out and send it to your regional application center. This information is also available on the registration page. You will need to send in a check or money order for the cost of the test when you mail your application. Cost for taking the test ranges from $150 to $225, as of January 2011, depending on where you live.

      Register in person. If you live in an area with a TOEFL resource center, you may register and pre-pay in person. Find out if there is a center in your area by visiting the registration page.
