How to Register for the SAT in DC

The SAT is a standardized test used by colleges to assess a student for college readiness. The SAT and the SAT Subject Tests are also used as a basis for other opportunities, such as scholarships. The SAT is offered several times the year in locations across the United States, including D.C.

Instructions

  1. Register Online

      Visit the College Board website and click "SAT," then click "Register."

      Enter your College Board log-in information and click "Sign In." If you do not have a College Board log-in, click "Sign Up" and follow the steps to create an online account.

      Complete the SAT questionnaire. You will be required to provide personal information, including your Social Security number and address. Click "Continue" and fill in the profile information about your college goals and high school courses and activities in D.C. Select your D.C. area high school from the school listing and click "Continue."

      Select your test date and testing center and click "Continue." If no testing dates are available, you will receive a message stating, "There are no available registration dates for the current test year. Please check back later to register for future dates." If the registration date has passed, you may register for standby testing if available.

      Enter your payment information. As of 2011, the fee for the SAT test is $47 for regular registration and $71 for late registration and is payable only by credit card. You may qualify for a fee waiver. SAT Subject Tests are $21 per test date and $21 per test for language and listening tests. All other subject tests are $10 per test in addition to the $21 test date fee.

    Register by Mail

      Visit your D.C. high school counselor's office and request the "SAT Paper Registration Guide."

      Complete the registration form enclosed in the Registration Guide. If you wish to have your results sent to a college, you will be required to provide the codes. You will also need codes for scholarship programs, test centers or your high school, if you would like your scores sent to your school. To find the codes, visit the College Board website and click "Register" and scroll to "Code Search." Select the codes you would like search for (for example, high school or college) and click "Go."

      Place your application and payment in the pre-addressed envelope provided in the Registration Guide and mail it. Payments for mailed applications can be provided by check or money order.

      Wait for your exam registration form to be delivered in the mail. You will be required to present the registration form on the date of your exam. If an exam date is not available, you will be notified by mail, and your payment will be returned.

    Standby Testing

      Visit your high school counselor's office and request the "SAT Paper Registration Guide."

      Complete the registration form in the registration guide and visit the exam location on the date of the exam. You must present a check or money order payment at the time of registration, and you must be at the test location no later than 7:45 a.m. the day of the exam. As of 2011, the standby fee is an additional $41.

      Wait to see if there is any standby seating available. There are a limited number of standby seats available on the testing date.
