Go to the Federation of State Medical Boards website and click on "Licensure Examinations" on the top left of the page. Scroll down to the bottom and choose "Online Application" under the "For Examinees" category.
Verify that you meet the FSMB's requirements to register then click on "Proceed to Online Application."
In the State-specific Requirements chart, click on the state that you would like to be licensed in. After choosing a state, click on "Proceed to Online Application."
Complete the application and pay the testing fee. A document will appear upon completion. Print this document out.
Attach your photo to the printout. You'll have to notarize the document before mailing it in to the provided address. The address varies among states. You will receive a scheduling permit in the mail within one to two weeks. The permit will contain your eligibility identification number that is needed to schedule the exam.
Go to the Prometric website once you receive your scheduling permit. You will need the eligibility identification number from the permit in order to complete registration.
On the Prometric website, check the "Academic, Professional Licensure & Certification, Government, and Corporate Programs" option in the first part. Then select the program you would like to test for from the drop-down menu.
Select "USA" and then the state where you will be taking the test in part two.
Choose "Schedule an Exam." Agree to all privacy notices and enter your scheduling identification number and the first four letters of your last name on the next page.
Select the "USMLE Step 3" from the list of exams.
Select a test location and click "Next." Choose a day and time and click "Next."
Enter any required personal data, and review information for any errors before paying any fees.
Print the confirmation page and keep the scheduling permit with it. You may need these when you arrive at the location on the exam date.
