How to Register for a Food Handler Permit Class

The Centers for Disease Control estimates that 48 million Americans suffer from food borne diseases each year. Often these diseases could be prevented by following proper food handling procedures. If you plan to work at a restaurant or any type of food facility where you'll be handling food that is served to the public, you may need to take a food handler class to learn more about food safety.

Research your state's food handling laws. Food handling requirements and policies vary from state to state, so it's important that you familiarize yourself with the policies that apply to you before enrolling in a training course. Call your local health department or visit its website to find out more about its training requirements. Keep in mind that in some states you might need to contact both your county and state health departments because they might each have specific policies.

Locate an approved training provider. Food handler permit classes are often taught by the local health department. However, some states may authorize training providers to teach the classes. If this is the case in your state, you can obtain a list of approved training providers through your health department either by viewing the list on their website or picking up a copy at one of their offices. Depending on the provider you choose, you may have the option to complete your entire training course online or by mail.

    • 3

Contact your training provider to get more information about the course. Ask them how long it takes to complete the course, so you can set aside enough time to obtain your permit. Keep in mind that you may have to arrive before the class begins in order to register or take a final exam after class. Check with your training provider for class availability. Weekend and evening courses may be available.

    • 4

Submit your registration. Call your training provider to register for the class or fill out their online registration form. Keep in mind that in some states, you may need to register prior to the course date. Make sure to have a photo ID with you when you register. Ask your training provider for information about any course materials you may need to bring to class with you.
