Training has been called "a garden of opportunity and growth," and the expansion in opportunities means a corresponding increase in the types of training positions available. Some of these positions are in a traditional classroom setting, while others involve an online LMS, or learning management system. Training opportunities exist in the entire spectrum of nonprofit and for-profit organizations.
  1. Trainer

    • The function of the trainer is to present training materials, either in a classroom or online setting. In either setting, the successful trainer must have a pleasant, easy-going manner with great patience for different personality types and a variety of learning styles. Regardless of the subject matter, she must be able to master new material quickly. A background in teaching is a natural prerequisite for a trainer.

    Training Materials Developer

    • The Training Materials Developer has the responsibility to create training materials using a variety of software applications. Like the Trainer, the Training Materials Developer must be a quick learner. In addition, the Training Materials Developer must be able to function well under considerable time pressure. He should have a high level of knowledge and experience with computers and a wide array of computer applications such as Microsoft PowerPoint and Adobe Captivate. The Training Materials Developer should combine the outlook of a teacher with the skills of a computer programmer.

    LMS Administrator

    • The LMS Administrator is responsible for creating and/or maintaining the e-learning platform used by the organization. In some cases the LMS Administrator is called upon to help select a new system. She should have a strong background in operating systems, databases, web servers and programming languages. The LMS Administrator can expect to work long hours, including evenings and weekends. She must be able to work effectively with both technical and non-technical staff.

    Training Manager

    • The Training Manager has overall responsibility for administering the budget, staff and programs of the training department. The Training Manager typically reports to the CEO or a senior VP but must be able to work effectively with people at all levels of the organization. He should be an experienced administrator who combines an affinity for detailed work with a penchant for articulating broad visions and formulating multiyear plans. While the Training Manager is not expected to have an in-depth knowledge of software applications for training, he must be analyze and articulate the costs and benefits.
