How to Register for Homeschooling

With homeschooling, parents provide their children with a custom-tailored education in the comfort of their own homes. Across the country, and even in some international locations, people are taking advantage of the right to home-educate while simultaneously strengthening their families, boosting their children's self-esteem and expanding their knowledge alongside their offspring. Some even homeschool for religious reasons. No matter what your reasons, you'll need to register to get started in most locations.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the laws for homeschooling in your state. Although homeschooling is legal in every part of the United States, each state's home education laws tend to be different in at least some ways. You can visit the HSLDA website for state law details (see Resources below).

    • 2

Gather your high school diploma and your child's immunization records and make photocopies. You may also need proof of recent medical and dental examinations. You can skip this step, however, if your state laws don't require you to submit such documentation.

    • 3

File a homeschooling notice, affidavit or registration form with your local school district or Department of Education. Depending on your state's laws, you may need to have this document notarized. Not all states require the same type of notification or registration, and some don't require notification at all.

    • 4

Submit any required documentation along with your homeschooling affidavit or notification. For example, your state may require you to prove that you've earned a high school diploma.

    • 5

Add homeschooling objectives or teaching plans to your registration packet if you are required to do so.

    • 6

Submit the entire registration packet to your school district or the appropriate office by the registration deadline, if one applies.
