How to Study for Usmle Step 1

Studying for USMLE Step 1 takes time, preparation, and effort from the medical students.       Make a study schedule that includes what topics you will study and when.

      Schedule your test. Find the testing center that is most conveniently located near you.

      Read through "First Aid for the USMLE Step 1." If you find any topics or keypoints confusing, clarify with your textbooks used during the first two years.

      Review the structure and format of USMLE Step1. Understand the timing of each question block and break time. Plan when you will take your breaks.

      Subscribe to USMLEWorld question bank online (see Resources). Start slowly by doing 25 questions per day. Review explanations to each question. Write notes in your First Aid and find the correlating information in your book.

      Simultaneously start your second round through First Aid. This time, spend significant time on each topic. Memorize key points and write notes in First Aid.

      Purchase an NBME examination from the NBME website (see Resources). Do this four-hour practice test when you have time available. You will be unable to review your answers, but this will give you an idea of what you would score on the USMLE Step 1.

      Reassess your goals. Are you close to your goal Step 1 score? If not, consider rescheduling your testing date.

      Complete all questions in USMLEWorld. Do 50 questions at a time. Review explanations thoroughly.

      Review your weaknesses in First Aid. Review the fundamentals of those topics. Test your knowledge with USMLEWorld questions.
