How to Study for Home Courses

Taking courses from home brings a unique set of challenges to your academic life. Finding time to focus can be difficult, but if you want to succeed with home-based courses, there are a few things you should to that can help set you up for that success.

Set class time, and stick to it. It can be hard to find time to study if you do not block your time out in advance. Commit to studying at least one hour per day, at the same time each day. This will allow you to plan your other activities around your study schedule.

    • 2

Stay on your deadlines. It is easy to procrastinate when there is no teacher hounding you, so make sure you start your assignments early and get them done before it is too late. Put important due dates from your syllabus onto a calendar and use it to stay on track.

    • 3

Treat your study time as if you would treat it at school. The time you spend working on schoolwork should mirror what you would be doing at a library or study group.

    • 4

Designate an area of your home as the study area. Use this area each time you study to focus and keep your home life separate from your school life. It is tempting to study in bed or on the couch, but it is also easy to lose track of time or fall asleep in these areas.

    • 5

Take a break when you need it. Burning out while studying won't get you anywhere, so get up and walk around when you feel like your brain is about to fry. A quick 10-minute break every hour of studying is usually enough to get the blood flowing and refocus your mind.
