NYC Schools Volunteer Projects

Like any urban schools, New York City schools have students from almost every type of social and economic background, and the needs for these students are both varied and demanding. Several volunteer programs are available if you wish to give your time to improving the education and social development of children at New York City schools. Some of these programs are with independent nonprofits, while others work directly with public and private schools.
  1. Harlem RBI

    • Located uptown on East 100th St., Harlem RBI enriches the lives of Harlem-dwelling school children by providing after school activities and tutoring. This volunteer project has a variety of opportunities for you to share your knowledge and skills with young children. Brainiacs can give their time as after school homework tutors, while those with sports skills can volunteer as coaches for one of Harlem RBI's several recreational baseball and softball leagues. If you're not great with kids, you can lend your business savvy by volunteering to raise funds or develop programs.

    Groundwork for Youth

    • The Brooklyn-based Groundwork for Youth offers tutoring and literacy assistance to middle school students in a low-income section of New York City. You give one-on-one homework help and mentoring to at-risk middle school students, giving them opportunities to hone their academic and literacy skills outside of the classroom. Since the program seeks to provide stable assistance to students and cultivate lasting mentorships, you are asked to pledge at least two hours a week to this volunteer project.

    "I Have a Dream" Foundation

    • The main goal of this volunteer project is simple: get New York City high school students into college. Yet the "I Have a Dream" Foundation pursues this goal in a lot of different ways. It needs you assist its many programs, which include on-campus arts education, museum partnerships, college tours, and tutoring. You can also participate in community service events and field trips that help students become engaged with their city and explore possibilities for their future.

    IMentor

    • For those too busy to volunteer on site at New York City schools, iMentor is a great way to give your time without leaving the comfort of your own home or office. Using the Internet, iMentor connects approved volunteer mentors to school children. The mentors then communicate through email and monthly meet-ups to talk about weekly discussion prompts with their partners. Several New York City schools partner with iMentor in Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Manhattan.
