Medieval Art Projects

Medieval art projects are an effective way to introduce students to medieval history. Projects are creative and entertaining for students and allow them to take ownership over their own work and learning, rather than reading another person's rendition of medieval history from a textbook. Medieval art projects can be used for students at various levels of learning through guidance from teachers.
  1. Mosaic

    • Mosaic art is featured in most medieval cultures. Students can be given information on different medieval mosaics or pictures, such as where mosaics were used and the general design features of mosaic art. Students can then be given materials to produce their own mosaic art as a project akin to medieval mosaics; framed pictures, wall hangings or general pictures using tiles/cutouts can be the basis for a mosaic art project.

    Manucript

    • Manuscript paper can be purchased by schools to replicate medieval writings. Students can each be given a piece of manuscript paper and several choices of paints (gold, silver, black and red display well on manuscript paper); they can then use the manuscript to write their name and any other information they would like to include, such as a short poem or rhyme. Students can illustrate the manuscript with a portrait of themselves or other images they wish to include to reproduce medieval art.

    Medieval Architecture

    • Students can create medieval architecture as drawings or 3D art projects (using boxes or plastic). Students can be shown examples of medieval buildings, for example castles, homes or churches that they can recreate in their own chosen art form (paintings, drawings, 3D art or papier-mache.) The Gothic features of medieval architecture can often inspire students to produce creative art pieces whilst still promoting understanding of medieval history.

    Medieval Tools

    • Students can be asked to bring in reusable items such as cardboard, plastic cups, newspaper or boxes. The teacher can show students images of tools used in the medieval period and ask the students to create these tools using the materials they have and display their art to the class, explaining why they chose to create those particular tools and what they were used for in the medieval period.
