How to Make a Toy Out of a Cardboard Box for a Preschooler

It's not just babies who enjoy an empty box as much as what was inside, so use your old cardboard boxes to create a brand new toy house, fort, train or boat for your preschooler to enjoy. Large boxes from appliances or large baby equipment make excellent preschooler size houses or boats, while smaller boxes can be used to make the doll-sized version of trains or forts for your preschooler's smallest friends.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw the outlines of any windows, doors or other openings onto your cardboard box in pencil.

    • 2

Cut the opening lines with a sharp utility knife. Keep preschoolers away from the cardboard box while you are using sharp objects to prevent accidents.

    • 3

Paint the cardboard box with your preschooler's help. Keep the paint design open-ended so that your cardboard box toy can be used for a variety of imaginative activities.

    • 4

Glue decorations onto your cardboard box, adding cardboard wheels for a train, fabric curtains at the windows with buttons or ribbons for extra decoration.

    • 5

Clear a space in your preschooler's playroom and watch preschoolers enjoy their new cardboard box toy.
