How to Make a Robot Out of Cardboard for Preschoolers

Crafts help develop the fine motor skills of young children. According to Angela Owens in "Putting Children First Magazine," fine motor skills use muscles in the fingers and the hands, which are the foundation for writing and self-help skills, such as dressing themselves. Making a robot out of cardboard for preschoolers is a craft that works on these fine motor skills. The activity uses a variety of materials for children to manipulate and there is no right or wrong way to construct their robot. A robot project fine tunes a preschooler's coordination by allowing them to glue objects and wrap with aluminum foil all by themselves.

  • Craft glue
  • Toilet paper tube
  • Aluminum foil

Instructions

    • 1

Squeeze glue all over a toilet paper tube. Cut off a 10-inch piece of aluminum foil to wrap the tube.

    • 2

Place the tube into the center of the 10-inch piece of aluminum foil. Wrap the foil around the tube to create a shiny surface for the robot.

    • 3

Create decorations on scrap pieces of construction paper with crayon or markers. Preschoolers can make buttons and gadgets on the paper.

    • 4

Cut out the decorations with safety scissors and glue them onto the foil-covered tubes. Glue two buttons side-by-side for eyes above the decorations.

    • 5

Instruct the children to bend two pipe cleaners for the robot's antennae. Help the children staple the pipe cleaners to the inside top of the robot. They should be on either side of the head. Stand the tube up to finish the robot.
