Pre K Nursery Rhyme Activities

Open a child’s mind to different forms of stories and poetry by learning nursery rhymes. The classic rhymes such as Jack and Jill, Little Miss Muffet and Humpty Dumpty are taught to children at a preschool or younger level. While speaking the rhymes to children will help them learn the stories, incorporating activities may help the children retain the information more accurately.
  1. Jack and Jill Stick Puppets

    • Upload pictures of Jack and Jill from your computer memory, or found online. The photos should be no larger than 6 inches tall and no wider than 3 inches. Give each child a Jack picture and a Jill picture to color. When complete, help the children attach the characters to large craft sticks to create stick puppets. As you read the nursery rhyme to the children, have them use their puppets to interact with the story.

    Little Miss Muffet's Spider

    • Create the spiders that scared Miss Muffet off her tuffet with pipe cleaners and a dowel rod. Give each child four long black pipe cleaners. Place two pipe cleaners into an “X” formation and twist one or two times in the center and still maintain the “X” shape. Lay another pipe cleaner across the center of the “X” and twist; repeat with the final pipe cleaner. Create the legs of the spider by bending the pipe cleaners in the center. Tie an 8-inch piece of string to the center knot in the spider and tie the other side to the end of a dowel rod. The kids can use the dowel rod to move the spider.

    Put Humpty Dumpty Back Together

    • Upload a picture of Humpty Dumpty with his legs and arms detached from his body to your computer. Print the picture out and give it to the children to color. When complete, help the children cut the picture from the paper and discard the scraps. After you tell the nursery rhyme to the children ask them to assemble Humpty Dumpty back together. The children will need to put his arms and legs back on his body. When complete, insert brad tacks into the paper to hold the pieces together and allow them to wiggle.

    Mouse Puppet

    • Teach the children about the Three Blind Mice by helping them make paper bag mice puppets. Give each child a small gray paper bag, or a brown bag that they can paint gray. Help children cut out three tall gray triangles, two smaller pink triangles, three small black circles and six long and skinny black rectangles. Glue two tall gray triangles to the upper corners of the bottom of the bag for ears, one gray triangle to the center of the bottom of the bag for the nose, two small black circles above the gray triangle for eyes, a black circle on the tip of the nose and the rectangles for whiskers.
