Activities to Go With the Nursery Rhyme Jack & Jill

Parents and teachers sing nursery rhymes with children because they are short, easy to remember and stimulate the imagination. Taking a familiar nursery rhyme like "Jack and Jill" and using it in a classroom setting gives young children a starting point for learning about different subjects. Not only will children be able to sing along with the song, but teachers will be able to take concepts from the song and put them into memorable school lessons.
  1. Story Sequencing

    • Teaching children about what comes first, second and third in a story is a good segue to reading as it helps kids build comprehension skills. Have the children sing "Jack and Jill" together. Talk about the events that occur in the story. Give the children a worksheet with pictures of Jack and Jill going up the hill, Jack falling down, and finally Jill tumbling down. Have the children color the pictures, cut them out, and glue them in order to a piece of construction paper.

    Recognizing Vocabulary

    • Some nursery rhymes contain vocabulary words which may be new to young children. Talk about the words in the song "Jack and Jill" that the kids might not use in daily language. "Fetch," "crown," and "tumble" are all words that can be explored. Ask the kids what they think each word means and have each child make up his own sentence containing each vocabulary word.

    Science

    • Use the "pail of water" in the "Jack and Jill" nursery rhyme as the subject of a science experiment. Split the children into small groups and give each a small pail of water. Give each group a number of objects. Have them predict on a sheet of paper which objects will float in the water and which ones will sink. Then have them test out their predictions by adding each item to the water and record the actual results on the paper next to their predictions.

    Rhyming

    • Sing the song "Jack and Jill" with the children. Discuss the words in the song that rhyme. List the rhyming words on a flip chart in two columns (Jill and hill in one column, down and crown in another). Have children come up with other words that rhyme with these words and write them down in the appropriate columns.
