Learning Activities for Pre School

According to WebMd, the ages between two and five are called the preschool years. A child learns much during this time, such as the alphabet, counting and identifying colors. A preschooler will be learning more words and communicating better. Adults must do everything to help the preschool child in these formative years, and certain activities can be quite conducive to learning.
  1. Math Activities

    • There are many ways to teach simple math. You can try activities such as writing numbers on index cards and placing them around the room. Ask a child to find a particular number. You can also do an activity in which you write numbers on index cards and then cut out pictures of objects that correspond to each number. Ask the children to match them up. Play a game using muffin tins. Write the numbers from one to 10 in each tin. Ask a child to place a certain number of objects in the tin to match up with the number.

    Alphabet Activities

    • Make a capital and a small version of each letter in the alphabet on an index card. Cut the card in half and mix the letters up. Ask the children to match up the capital and the small letters. Play the X and O Game. Print a letter at the top of a piece of paper. Write other letters below this in no particular order. Ask the children to circle the letters that match and x off the ones that do not match.

    Science and Nature Activities

    • Teach children how plants grow. Buy seeds and show the children how to plant the seeds in a small pot and water each day. Children will get to see the plants grow over time. Have the children take turns watering and rotating the plant. An interesting game to learn about animals uses animal crackers. Have each child take a cookie and act out the animal by making sounds and movements. Help a child act out an animal with which he is unfamiliar.

    Social and Behavioral Activities

    • Play behavior games. The hot and cold game is when children hide an object and one child must find it. The children state the words hot or cold, hot signifying the child is getting closer to the object, cold further. This teaches cooperation as children work together. Play "Mother, May I?" Line up the children. Ask one child to do something like take one step. The child must ask, "Mother, May I?" before starting. If the child does that she moves forward. If she forgets, she goes back. This teaches respect and attention to teachers' instructions.
