Safety Activities for School Ages

Teach young children about safety, which is very important, through fun and interactive activities. It's helpful for parents and other loved ones to know that children are empowered with the information they need to stay safe. It's easy to accomplish safety activities with basic materials at school and at home with children.
  1. Don't Talk to Strangers

    • The story "Little Red Riding Hood" is enjoyable for children of all ages. In addition to its entertainment value, the story's theme teaches young readers not to speak with strangers. Read the story with kids and discuss the parts that pertain to this theme. Discuss what Little Red Riding Hood should have done instead of talking to the wolf.

    Fire Safety

    • Stop, drop and roll are essential fire-safety rules that kids should have memorized. All children should be familiar with these three words and, most importantly, the actions that go along with them. Take children to a large area where they can practice stopping, dropping and rolling---and try turning it into a game to see who can do it the quickest.

    Emergency Calls

    • 911 is the essential number for kids to know when making an emergency call. By creating a practice handout for young children, they can practice writing and recognizing these important numbers. Use pretend phones to make calls to 911 and role play what to say in an emergency.

    Car Safety

    • Draw pictures of cars and talk about car safety. Law requires wearing a seat belt for all children. There are parts of cars that can be dangerous for kids, such as playing behind a car where an adult can't see them. In the drawings of cars, use a red marker to highlight areas that children should avoid.

    What to Do When Lost

    • No one likes being lost, especially young children. When a child is lost, it's important for them to stay where they are. Talking with a police officer or person wearing a uniform can assist with finding parents and not leaving an area with someone or on their own. Pretend play being lost and solving the situation with kids.

    Animal Safety

    • Everyone loves animals, but some creatures may not be as friendly as others. Never approach a dog or cat unless with an adult and permission from the pet's owner. Draw pictures of animals and talk about how to slowly approach them safely, with your hand out for the animal to smell.
