New Year's Countdown will help children learn to count backwards from ten to one. You can create your own faces and party hats or download and print them from the File Folder Fun website. Open the file folder and glue the faces on one side. Attach numbered party hats to the opposite sides with Velcro circles so children can easily pull them off and put them back. To play, children place the numbered party hats on the heads in descending order from ten to one.
Cupcake Count allows children to practice counting and number recognition. One side of this file folder game contains five cupcakes numbered from one to five. The other side contains cupcakes with cherries to represent the numbers one through five. Students must match the correct numbered cupcake with the corresponding number of cherries. Children can practicing sequencing by size with the Apple Sequence game. Make apples or another shape of varying sizes. Keep them in an envelope pocket attached to the inside of the file folder or use Velcro dots to keep them in place. The challenge is for students to put them in order from smallest to largest or largest to smallest. Create your own shapes or download and print apples from the File Folder Fun website.
Use this pattern game to help students recognize and match patterns. Develop about three or four simple patterns and cut into strips. Make two of each pattern. Glue one set of the pattern strips on one side of the file folder. Keep the set of matching pattern strips on the other side in an envelope or attached with Velcro dots.
