Decide on the theme for your sensory box. Your box could be filled with items that relate to personal care, such as a toothbrush, hair clip or comb, or your box might be a combination of many different types of items with different textures. You can even create seasonal or holiday-themed boxes for Christmas, Halloween or things that are associated with the summer or winter season.
Create a list of the supplies you will need, including the box itself. Remember to choose a box that is neither too small nor too large. A shoe box can be ideal since it will allow for a hole that a child can reach through to feel the objects inside.
Cut a hole in the side of your box large enough for preschoolers to reach through and grab different items. The hole should also be large enough for items to be removed so that the child will know that he or she guessed right. You can also glue a fabric flap over the hole to ensure that the mystery items inside will not be seen.
Tape the lid of your shoe box securely to the box.
Decorate your sensory box with paper, fabric or other materials that can be found at home or at most craft stores. If you are creating a themed box, you can use holiday wrapping paper or cutouts of things associated with that theme such as snowmen or Christmas stockings for a Christmas-themed box.
