How to Make a Sensory Board

A sensory board contains several different items that are meant to promote an awareness of the senses and are used to offer an interactive, tactile experience. These boards are often used with young children to develop their senses and language skills. To create a sensory board, gather a variety of items that appeal to each of the senses and assemble them onto a piece of foam board.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a large piece of foam board onto a flat surface. A 40-by-20-inch piece of foam board or larger is ideal.

    • 2

Use a marker to divide the board into five sections. Label each section with the name of one of the five senses: sight, touch, smell, sound and taste.

    • 3

Gather items that pertains to each of the senses. For example, for sight, pick out a variety of vibrantly colored pictures; for touch, select items such as cotton balls, sandpaper and tin foil; for smell, spray pieces of fabric with different types of perfume or cologne; for sound, choose a squeak toy and bells. For taste, fill zip-top bags with different tasting foods, such as chocolate, peppermint and sour candies.

    • 4

Staple or glue each of the items into the appropriate section on the board. The items that pertain to sight should be stapled into the section labeled "sight," the items that pertain to touch should be placed in the section labeled "touch" and so forth.

    • 5

Display the sensory board on a wall or lay it on a table. Invite children to use the board to explore each of their senses.
