How to Make Calendar Graphs

Calendar graphs are large calendars you make out poster board or other kid-friendly material, such as felt. Create a calendar graph with poster board that you can customize with hook-and-loop tape. After making a basic template, you can continue to use it, month after month. Create pieces for different seasons, holidays and lesson plans and switch them out each week. Use your calendar graph and customizable pieces to teach children about seasons, time and the days of the week.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a grid onto a large piece of poster board with a permanent black ink marker. Measure 2 inches in from all sides on the poster board and draw a rectangle on the surface. Fill the rectangle in with nine rows and as many columns as there are children in your home or class. Use a ruler to create straight lines.

    • 2

Create month and day-of-the-week name tags from foam core board. Create one rectangle that spans the width of the grid and length of the top row and measures 12 inches by 4 inches. Cut the rectangle from the foam core board with a utility knife. Write "January" in capital letters across the rectangle. Repeat this step 11 times until you have one rectangle for every month.

    • 3

Measure the length and width of one of the grid squares. Make seven squares from foam core board that match these measurements. Write the days of the week on each square. Make additional square for each child in your class or home. Write each child's name on a foam core square.

    • 4

Cut a piece of hook-and-loop tape with a sticky back to fit inside each square on the grid. Attach one piece inside each square with the loop side up. Cut and attach a matching piece of hook tape to the backs of foam core squares with the days of the week and children's names. Cut three pieces of loop tape and attach to the row at the top of the grid. Cut three matching pieces for each month and attach to the backs of the rectangles with the hook side facing out.

    • 5

Attach the appropriate month rectangle to the grid's top row. Connect days-of-the-week squares beneath the month row into the squares in the second row of the grid. Place "Monday" in the second square from the left edge. Skip to the next row and place children's name squares over the boxes that span the far left column.

Create customizable shapes and items for each day of the week. Place stickers of animals, weather like snowflakes, sun, moon and stars, as well as leaves, tools and cars onto foam core board. Cut sticker shapes from foam core board with a utility knife and place a piece of hook-and-loop tape, hook-side up, onto the back of each foam shape. Separate shapes into zip-top bags and use them with lesson plans and seasons. Let the children choose their favorite animal, type of weather or other shape and stick it next to their names on the appropriate day of the week. You'll have a reusable, customizable tool you can use to teach children about weather, dates, seasons and days of the week.
