Hand out a copy of a calendar to each child. You only need to start out with one month.
Point to today's date and explain how each box represents a day. You can also talk about how each day is described using a date. Indicate that the box before was yesterday, and that the next box represents tomorrow.
Highlight the days of the week at the top of the page and explain how seven days make up one week.
Read through the days of the week with the kids. Do this several times so that you know they are comfortable with the pronunciations. Repeat daily as necessary.
Introduce the months of the year. Start by telling each child about the month you are in. Explain that, once you get down to the end of that month, the calendar page turns and you start a new month.
Read through the months of the year with the kids, once again making sure that each of them can say all of the names. Repeat these names daily until all of the kindergarteners can remember the order.
Explain to the students that calendars are also used for reminding us about holidays or the days plans. Have each child find today's date and write in the plans for what they expect to do today. As a group, go through and mark important holidays. Finally, test the kids and see if they can find their own birthday.
