Teach children the names of the 50 states in alphabetical order. Choose a catchy tune that children are familiar with, such as "Mary Had a Little Lamb" or "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" and substitute the lyrics to the song with the names of the 50 states. Repeatedly sing the song to ingrain the names of the states in children. The repeated tune of the song, as well as children's familiarity with it will help them remember the names of the states.
Print out the names of the 50 states on individual index cards. Spread the cards out and encourage children to arrange them in alphabetical order. By arranging the cards, children will become familiar with the names of the states, as they have to read the names of the states to complete the task.
Provide children with a 50 states puzzle. Encourage children to disassemble the puzzle and reassemble it. This activity will help them learn the names of each of the states, as well as their locations.
Spread a large map of the 50 states on the floor. Encourage children to walk along the map and instruct them to say the name of each state as they step on each one.
Offer children a blank print out of the United States and give them a list of the 50 states; encourage them to use the list as a reference and have them fill in each state's name on the map in the proper location.
Hang a blank map of the United States on a wall. Print out the names of the 50 states on index cards and place adhesive on the back of each card. Prompt children to place the cards on the proper location.
