How to Teach the Children of Immigrants

The children of immigrants are most often born in the United States and are citizens, but they also carry the cultural influences of their parents' home countries into their learning and social environments. Schools can be a place to embrace this diversity so that all the students can benefit from diversity in language, topics and teaching styles presented in the classroom.

Instructions

    • 1

Develop a language program for a learning environment that includes children of immigrants. Take into account how many children in the class are using English as a second language. According to the Council of State Governments, you will either need to choose an immersion program, where students are all in the same classroom where English is primarily spoken, or you will need to develop an English as second language (ESL) program, where students are given special language and classroom help outside of the classroom setting.

    • 2

Allow culture and diversity to become a way to help you teach the children of immigrants, as well as the other students in your classroom. You can have students give presentations on their cultural heritage, and have them also present ways that their families have integrated into the American culture. Have students participate in open discussions about diversity, as well as the national and world histories that pertain to everyone's different heritage.

    • 3

Use the strengths of the children of immigrants to help them excel in the classroom. For example, an NBC presentation has found that many children of Indian parents have been excelling in math and science, so these could be subjects that these children could actively learn and help other students with by sharing the material.

    • 4

Follow a set of guidelines set up by the school or the state so that students all stay on track with one another. The No Child Left Behind Act is an example of this teaching and assessment program that was established in 2001 to help keep track of the progress of all American students and their affiliate schools.
