Study the curriculum for the grades and subjects you expect to teach. Assuming you are licensed to teach in your state, you should have considerable knowledge of the subject matter for your areas and grades. Study Sabis curriculum areas you are not sufficiently knowledgeable about. Sabis works on a system of priority and secondary "points." Go through the curriculum and identify the priority points for each lesson or set of lessons and decide how you will monitor your students to ensure their capability with each. Review the textbooks designated for your subjects and grades and prepare the assignments you will give for each lesson or set of lessons. Develop homework assignments that will enhance and reinforce learning.
Help students to increase and improve their knowledge, skills and attitudes and stay motivated. Learn teaching techniques favored by the Sabis system. Consult with other Sabis system teachers about their methods and observe them when possible. Become aware of the educational tools provided by Sabis so that you can use them effectively. According to Sabis' description of their methods, "teaching techniques include memorization and phonics in reading and drilling in basic mathematics, among others." Their teachers, they state, do not spend much time lecturing but cover the priority curriculum points one at a time to help ensure each is learned. The teachers use a three-step process, described as "Teach, Practice, and Check." After explaining each concept and giving examples, they assign written activities to monitor learning. Students often engage in group activities so they can help each other.
Assist students in their extracurricular activities. Students become part of a student-run organization that takes responsibility for extracurricular activities and discipline. Teachers can provide guidance that helps students develop relationship skills, leadership skills, positive attitudes toward learning and good citizenship. Parents are expected to play a role in the school and teachers can help provide the proper environment for their participation.
