How to Teach Children to Make Sentences

Children learn in different ways and at a different pace, depending on a range of factors. The way and speed at which a child learns can be affected by that child's exposure to materials and resources at home and in the classroom, as well as various types of learning disabilities. One of the earliest tasks for parents and teachers is to help their children start to write sentences.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a subject that will be appealing to children, such as an upcoming holiday like Christmas or an activity that they enjoy.

    • 2

Ask students to help you identify things that go with your theme, like Christmas trees or sleighs.

    • 3

Prompt students to say something about the things that they have identified as a part of your theme. For example, they might talk about decorating a Christmas tree.

    • 4

Ask students to help you with coming up with some sentences on the topic you've chosen. Write on the board as the children say them. Prompt students when necessary, such as asking "Rudolph had what colored nose?" Dissect the sentences, explaining to children what each word in the sentence is and its relationship with the other words in the sentence.
