How to Teach a Kindergartener to Use the Library

By kindergarten, most kids are able to make their way through books meant for beginning readers and can recognize simple words, according to PBS.org. Because of the reading milestones associated with this age, it is the perfect age in which to introduce them to the library. Whether it is the school library or the public one in your community, teaching a kindergartner to use the library consists of more than just showing him how to find a book.

Instructions

    • 1

Take your child on a tour of the entire facility. While she may be overwhelmed at first, she can more effectively learn how to navigate the library if she has a sense of the size of the space. Moreover, following the tour, you can then visit a new area of the library each time you visit. For example, one visit might consist of 15 minutes spent in the computer center learning about computers and the library's technological offerings. The next visit might be a visit to the newspaper clipping section, where you can show your kindergartner newspaper clippings from years ago.

    • 2

Introduce your child to some of the staff members. You want him to get accustomed to asking staff for help finding a book or using a library reference. The more familiar he gets with library staff members over time, the more likely he will take the initiative to ask them questions on his own when he needs help.

    • 3

Familiarize your child with age-appropriate areas of the library. Kindergartners should spend most of their time in the children's section, so make sure they are familiar with it. Show your child where the books for her specific age are and how to properly take them out of place and put them back if she opts to look at a different book. In some libraries, a cart is available in the children's section for kids to stack books that need to go back on the shelf. Consult with your library staff to find out what its preference is on kids returning books to the shelves.

Discuss safety issues. Teach your child how to call for help if a stranger approaches her improperly and make sure she does not leave your sight to wander to other areas of the library alone. Identify library personnel and security officers and instruct your child to approach a staff member if she gets separated from you for any reason.
