Increase the amount of words that your second grade students know through computer programs that shows the word on the screen by itself, broken out phonetically, contains a picture of the word and says the word out loud. Seeing and hearing new words in these various ways can help a second grader's brain to absorb the information.
Instruct each child to read an ebook. The child should choose an ebook suited to her level. Let them read out loud or quietly to themselves. A student can electronically mark where she left off and pick it up in the same spot the next day.
Open a computer program that contains reading games to kids geared toward helping them to improve their comprehension skills. For example, programs that let kids click on relevant pictures as the story is being told can teach them to listen to what the narrator is saying.
Let the kids conduct research projects, using the Internet as their research method. This teaches second graders critical and analytical thinking, while it also helps them to become interested in non-fiction topics.
Allow the second graders to read parts of stories on the computer and then use their imaginations to determine what will happen next. Along with reading skills, a child's imagination and individuality can be strengthened.
