How to Teach a Non Reader How to Use the Computer

There is an assortment of software and hardware enhancements designed to move non-readers from illiteracy to computer literacy. Interactive lessons, self-paced modules, individualized learning and entertaining features all contribute to a better experience for the non-reader and therefore encourage learning. Computers interact with students at their own pace, ensuring that a non-reader never becomes lost or bored. Non-readers need a few modifications to their computers--such as like speech-to-text programs and video help--in order for them to feel comfortable and enable learning to take place.

Instructions

    • 1

Show the student how to use a speech-to-text program. Speech-to-text programs translate the spoken word to text, allowing a non-reader to see their words on screen.

    • 2

Mount touch screens onto PCs and laptops and show the student how to use them. Touch screens allow a user to touch icons, move items around and open files without the need to interact with the keyboard.

    • 3

Replace text help on the computer with spoken or video help. Demonstrate the use of help topics for the student.

    • 4

Ensure that every interface is iconic. For example, instead of a link to "E-mail," make sure that there is a meaningful icon (for example, a letter) to lead the student to the right place.
