How to Use Computers for Centers Inside the Classroom

Incorporating computers into the classroom is a simple way to expose young children to technology. Loading the computer with educational games expands the children's world while they play. As they manipulate the virtual world, they learn how to logon, open a game, use the mouse and save their data. According to the University of Alabama, teachers who offered their students video games, engaged a wider range of children.

Place the computer in an easily accessible place in the classroom. Face the monitor towards the room so that the child faces away from distractions when working on the computer.

    • 2

Create a unique ID for each child in the classroom. Place an icon with the child's picture on the desktop. This procedure is different depending on whether the classroom computer is a PC or Mac. Check with your school's technology specialist for the procedure needed for your school's computer system.

    • 3

Load the programs for the classroom. There are a wide range of programs available that combine puzzles, early language skills and computer skills. Check with your school's technical specialist before loading software.

    • 4

Take each child to the computer center during the first week of computer access. Show the child how to logon, open a game or program, and save their progress.

    • 5

Set a timer for each child's turn to ensure every child has the same amount of computer time.
