How to Use Science Centers in the Classroom

With larger class sizes and all-day kindergarten, it is becoming more and more apparent that teachers need a means of occupying the students who finish early and enjoy learning on their own. One of the best ways to accomplish this is through centers; stationary areas in the classroom set up with a certain subject in mind. One of the cheapest and simplest ones to set up is a science center.

Instructions

    • 1

Review your curriculum and determine "themes" for the drawers of the science center. Examples of themes could include magnetism, motion, animals or plants.

    • 2

Collect items that relate to each of the themes. For instance, you could have a bug and butterfly collection, pet hamster, animal fur and feathers and some stuffed animals for the animal theme. Make sure that all of the items you collect will fit well into your station and that the kids will have easy access to the items.

    • 3

Introduce kids to the center and explain its purpose. Show kids some of the activities and explain how everything is organized.

    • 4

Pull out particular center tools to match the curriculum's theme. While the other supplies will still be available for students, placing applicable items in plain view will attract the kids and make them want to play and experiment with the materials.
