Create a word wall for sight words. Write new sight words on cut-up sentence strips each week using a black permanent marker. Tape the sight words on your word wall in alphabetical order so they're easy for children to find as they learn to look for the words by beginning sound.
Set up two or three sight word activity centers. Place one sight word, such as "and", in the middle of the table and provide students with construction paper, old magazines, scissors and glue. Instruct children to cut out letters or words to match the sight word then glue the words onto their construction paper.
Play the game of Hangman using sight words. Provide children with chalk to play Hangman with a small group of three or four children. Fill a plastic bucket with sight words written on index cards so they children can pick random words for their group to guess by filling in the letter blanks one by one.
Reinforce the learning of sight words by playing Sight Word Bingo with the whole class. Print out bingo cards with sight words instead of numbers, and provide children with bingo chips. Assist children with new sight words by sounding or clapping out syllables.
