How to Read Aloud Books for Years Seven & Eight

Reading aloud is a valuable part of the elementary school day because it allows children to enjoy literature while absorbing good reading behaviors. As a teacher you can model reading strategies for seven- and eight-year-old children. You can choose to let the students absorb skills naturally or you can explicitly highlight the skills you are using. A read-aloud can be used as a relaxation activity or as part of a lesson in any subject area.

Instructions

    • 1

Introduce the book. Explain what genre of book you are reading and what, if any, elements you would like the students to watch and listen for as you read. If the book is part of a lesson plan, tell the class what they will be learning about. Ask the students questions, if desired. Review behavior for read-aloud time, if necessary. Remind students to sit quietly, face forward, keep their hands to themselves, and raise their hands to ask a question or comment when prompted.

    • 2
Think about your intonation as you read.

Speak slowly and articulately so that students can understand what you are saying and have a chance to process new information. Use expressions as you read by making your voice go up and down to reflect what is happening in the text. Create character voices and vary your volume to hold your students' attention, create suspense and help them visualize the plot.

    • 3
      Share illustrations with your students.

Pause to comment, ask questions or allow the students to share their ideas. Prompt them to make predictions or draw inferences. Encourage students to guess, question, notice and wonder. Show the pictures while you are reading or after you finish each page. Reflect on the story with your students after you finish the book.
