Enroll in the Book It! program. If you are a teacher or a home schooling parent, you can enroll your student or the class as a whole in the "Book It!" program. Visit the site listed in the resources section to do so.
Select books. Help yourreaders choose books at their reading levels. By selecting books that are neither too difficult nor too hard you can increase their chances of success. Also aim to choose books in which the readers will take natural interest, such as those about topics that directly appeal to them.
Set a timer for 20 minutes. Use a kitchen timer or electronic timer that you can display in your classroom or home reading space. The R.E.D. Zone program stipulates that all readers should read for a solid 20 minute block.
Have students read until the timer sounds. Avoid reminding students of how much time remains too frequently, as doing so can distract them from the task of reading. Instead, leave the timer where students can see it should they need to refresh their memories as to how much time they have remaining.
Record students' reading. Give each student a reading log on which he can record which books he read and for how long. Report these reading totals back to the "Book It!" program, allowing your participants to earn their free pizzas.
